College Profile

 

Mairang Presbyterian Science College is essentially a rural Science College located at Mairang in West Khasi Hills District. The College is the first Science College in West Khasi Hills District. Interestingly, it is the only College in the State which is devoted exclusively to the teaching of Science and Mathematics. The College is situated at Mairang town which is a Sub-Divisional headquarter of Mairang Sub-Division. Mairang itself has a great historical significance in that it is the traditional headquarter of Hima Nongkhlaw where, U Tirot Sing, the great Khasi hero and ruler and foremost freedom fighter of North East India ruled till his death in 1835 as a prisoner of the British Empire in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Mairang is also the headquarter of Mairang Presbytery, a constituent unit of Khasi Jaintia Synod Sepngi which is under Presbyterian Church of India.

The College is a Co-educational Institution established by the Mairang Presbytery during 2006-07 and registered under Meghalaya Societies Registration Act, 7 of 1990 (vide No.NRS/MPC-843/2004 dated 19th March, 2004) in the Office of the Joint Registrar of Societies, West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin.

The College is situated in Mairang town, the District Headquarter of Eastern West Khasi District. Mairang holds historical importance as the traditional headquarters of Hima Nongkhlaw, the kingdom once ruled by U Tirot Sing, the great Khasi patriot, ruler, and one of the foremost freedom fighters of Northeast India. He led a strong resistance against British colonial forces and died in 1835 as a prisoner in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The town also serves as the headquarters of the Mairang Presbytery, a constituent unit of the Khasi Jaintia Synod Sepngi under the Presbyterian Church of India.

 

History

Mairang Presbyterian Science College is a purely private College established during 2006-07 by Mairang Presbytery the Sponsoring Body. Mairang Presbytery is a constituent unit of Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Synod Sepngi. The College started functioning with the opening of the First Year B.Sc (Pass Course) in June, 2007 during the academic session 2007-08. At that time the College functions at its temporary campus located near Mot Tirot Sing in Mairang Mission and it is housed in a three-storeyed RCC building owned by Mairang Presbytery.

With the completion of the first phase of Construction of the College Building at its Permanent Campus, all the Departments except the office were shifted to the New Campus.

Chronological Events of the College

  1. 1.6th June 2006 is the Red Letter Day for the College since on this day the College was inaugurated by the Sponsoring Body i.e., Mairang Presbytery to serve the people of Mairang and its adjoining areas and West Khasi Hills District at large. 
  1. 2. The year 2009 is a memorable year for our College as it witnessed the opening of the Higher Secondary Section in Science Stream. 
  1. 3.The year 2011 saw the College crossing another milestone as the Foundation Stone for the construction of the College Building in its Permanent Campus was laid by Prof. R.C Laloo, Education Minister, Government of Meghalaya on 7th May, 2011. 
  1. 4. In 2011 the College also witnessed a breakthrough in the academic development when the First Batch of B.Sc (Pass Course) graduated from NEHU and First Batch of Class XII passed the HSSLC Examination from MBOSE. 
  1. 5. The year 2013 is a momentous year where the College took a giant leap from its Temporary Campus to its Permanent Campus. The College Building was inaugurated on the 6th September, 2013 by Dr. Mukul Sangma, Honourable CM, Govt. of Meghalaya. 
  1. 6. The year 2015 took the College to another level of development when the North Eastern Hill University implemented the Semester System which automatically upgraded the College to its Honours Course. 
  1. 7. The year 2017 is another memorable year for the College as in this year the College attains the tenth milestone in its journey to provide Higher Education in Science and Mathematics to Mairang and its adjoining areas and West Khasi Hills District at large. 
  1. 8. The year 2018 is another year of achievement for the College as the First Batch of B.Sc Honours students came out with flying colours in the B.Sc. VI Semester Examination conducted by North Eastern Hill University with 100% pass percentage. 
  1. 9. The College witnessed another level of development when the Higher Secondary Section was delinked and shifted to its own building on the 30th September, 2019.

Vision and Mission

 

The College was established with the aim to provide access to Higher Education in Science and Mathematics of comparable standards and quality to the youths of Mairang and its adjoining areas in particular and the youths of West Khasi Hills District at large and particularly to cater to the needs and aspirations of the vast majority of economically disadvantaged rural tribal students who could not afford to pursue their higher studies in these subjects outside the district. As such the College has a vision:

“To promote academic excellence in Science and Mathematics education among students as well as developing in them high standards of conduct and integrity in a Christian environment primarily for the economically disadvantaged rural tribal students and enabling them to prepare for a life of purpose, dignity and dynamism for service to mankind.” In essence, the vision is in line with Article 51A of our Constitution which, inter alia, enjoins on us a fundamental duty:

“To strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective responsibility so that the Nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.” The mission of the College is to achieve its vision. The College Motto is the latent prime mover. It constantly urges the learners:

“Arise and shine” It is a clarion call on the young learners to get up, forge ahead and develop their full potential. The logo itself symbolizes the dawn of a new era, radiant with enlightenment and boundless possibilities and opportunities.

Recognition and Affiliation

 

The College obtained the opening permission from the Director, Higher and Technical Education, Meghalaya since 2005 [vide letter No.CE/OP/1/2003/59 dated 28th January, 2005]. The College also obtained the provisional affiliation from the Director College Development Council, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong in June 2008 [vide letter No.CDC/A-229/2008/3283 dated 23rd June, 2008].

The College has an attached Higher Secondary Section in Science Stream which serves as a feeder section. The Higher Secondary Section is run and managed by a Managing Committee duly constituted by Mairang Presbytery, the Sponsoring Body.

The opening permission was granted by the Director School Education & Literacy, Meghalaya in 2009 [vide letter No. DSEL (NG.HSS/OP/8/2010/11 dated 27th September, 2009)] and by the Meghalaya Board of School Education in 2010 [vide letter No. MBOSE/AW/OP/HR/17108/25/550-25/560 dt. 5/10/2010].

Governing Body of the College

 

The College is run and managed by the Governing Body duly constituted by the Mairang Presbytery which is the Sponsoring Authority and approved by the State Government from time to time. The Governing Body meets regularly to address the various issues, problems and challenges faced by this newly established Science College with a view to finding out ways and means to solve such problems as well as striving its efforts to take the College forward and making it an Institute of excellence.

Principal's Profile

Shri R. Thangkhiew is the founder Principal of Mairang Presbyterian Science College. He is a Master Degree Holder in Physics with Specialisation in Nuclear Physics and Cosmic Rays Radiation from Gauhati, University, Assam. He also obtained a Diploma in Advanced Studies of Environmental Education with distinction from Liverpool University, England.

He started his career as a Lecturer in Physics at Jowai Government College (now known as Kiang Nangbah Government College) at the time when the Government of Meghalaya introduced the Science Stream in the college. He was thus entrusted with the responsibility to start the Physics Department. When the Government of Meghalaya started the State Council of Educational Research and Training (now known as Directorate of Educational Research and Training, DERT) his services was transferred there to help start the Department of Science. While serving in the DERT he was also entrusted with the responsibility to establish the Shillong Public School, Govt. of Meghalaya and thus served as its founder Principal. He retired from service as Joint Director, DERT. His service was also utilized in starting the RGIIM, Shillong. As an educationist he has contributed significantly in the promotion and development of Science and Mathematics Education in Meghalaya.
